Mallory created many of the cover illustrations for Hood's books, such as his last novel, Near Water, which is set at Charleston Lake.
The Hood Children
Son John Hood is a noted Ontario visual artist. This image shows one of his watercolours based on observations at the lake.
Daughter Alexandra Hood owns a Toronto fitness studio, while daughter Sarah Hood is a writer in Toronto. They still return for getaways to the cottage whenever they can.
Another son, Dwight Hood, died in 2004 and is buried beside his father just outside Athens, a few miles from Lookout Lodge.
Noreen Mallory's mother Jeanne was a talented self-taught painter who produced many paintings like this one around the district.
The Athens Murals
John Hood and Noreen Mallory were both chosen to paint murals depicting local history in the nearby town of Athens. This image, by Mallory, shows a cottage scene of the 1900s, and is based on family photographs.
The Hood Family
Lookout Lodge was built in the 1960s by Canadian author Hugh Hood OC (1929-2000) and his wife, visual artist Noreen Mallory. They spent about three months of every year at the cottage, with their four children, and it inspired numerous creative works by the couple, including this image of a flying heron by Mallory.
